Pupils Nominate Their Favourite Books For Duchess Of Cornwall’s 70th Birthday

Literacy charities including the National Literacy Trust, Beanstalk, BookTrust, First Story, Roald Dahl and the Wicked Young Writer Awards, celebrated the Duchess of Cornwall’s 70th birthday by compiling a list of the top 70 books for children. From classics such as Charlotte’s Web to more recent books such as There’s a Bear on my Chair and also some fantastic non-fiction books including Coding for Beginners using Scratch, the list was voted for by children themselves.

To celebrate their patron’s birthday, the charities have given 70 primary schools from across the UK specially-designed bookshelves filled with the fabulous list of books. Jonathan Douglas, director of the National Literacy Trust, said: “We hope pupils at the 70 schools who receive the bookshelves will be inspired to enjoy reading and read more widely, which our research shows has a significant impact on their attainment.” The Duchess of Cornwall was also presented with a set of the bookshelves at a birthday garden party at Clarence House.
