Orion Children’s Acquires a Darkly Comic Adventure Series from Will Mabbitt

Orion Children’s Books, part of the Hachette Children’s Group, has acquired a frighteningly funny new middle-grade series from author, Will Mabbitt – taking his celebrated comic talents in an altogether more gothic direction.

Embassy of the Dead introduces Jake – an ordinary boy who likes to stay out of trouble, usually. But when he opens a strange box containing a severed finger, trouble comes knocking at his door. Literally. Jake has summoned a reaper to drag him to the Eternal Void (as deadly as it sounds) and his only option is to RUN FOR HIS LIFE! While desperately trying to escape his grim fate, Jake makes another spooky discovery – he can see and speak to ghosts – and to have any chance of survival, he must ask for protection from the Embassy of the Dead. But such protection comes at a price and Jake learns he must save a ghost before he can save himself …

Samantha Swinnerton, Senior Commissioning Editor, Orion Children’s Books, acquired world rights from Paul Moreton at Bell Lomax Moreton Agency Ltd. The first book in the series will publish in paperback in June 2018, with further books following in Jan and July 2019.

Samantha says: ‘Humour, energy and inventiveness are Will’s trademarks and I’m delighted to welcome such a talented author to the list. Embassy of the Dead takes Will’s writing in a slightly darker, but hugely exciting new direction that will entertain young readers everywhere.’

Will Mabbitt, whose previous series sold in 14 languages in its first year, says: ‘I’m so excited that the Embassy of the Dead will be opening its doors to children across the world.  (Let’s hope some of them get back out safely). I loved writing the story and I can’t wait to get cracking on the next one.’

Paul Moreton says: ‘Will Mabbitt has created the perfect blend of suspense and humour that young readers will adore, and Orion have some very exciting (and scary) plans to bring the book to the attention of buyers and readers.’

When the Embassy of the Dead calls, just HOPE you’re not in …
