2012′s 500 WORDS short story writing competition on Radio 2 has been a huge success, with children in the UK submitting over 74,000 stories!

Since then, over 2,000 volunteer teachers and librarians and the National Literacy Trust have whittled it down to a Top 50 shortlist, which Chris Evans has unveiled on the Radio 2 Breakfast Show. Chris and the panel of expert judges will meet to pick the overall winners, to be announced live at the Telegraph Hay Festival on 1st June.

All 50 stories are displayed on the 500 WORDS website, and this year, users will be able to listen to and download recordings of every story, read by the BBC Radio Drama Company. There are some wonderful stories, and the audio really does bring them to life.

A brilliantly exciting day today, as we visited No. 10 Downing Street to meet the Prime Minister, with a group of children from Churchill Gardens Primary School and wham, bam, jelly and jam top author, Jeremy Strong!

The children looked fantastic – dressed as an array of book characters from Charlie Bucket (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), Mr Benn, Dorothy (The Wizard of Oz), Greg Heffley (Diary of a Wimpy Kid) and Cartoon Kid and laughed their socks off with Jeremy Strong talking amongst other things about his writing shed…complete with fridge replete with chocolate! Years 3 & 4 had great chat with David Cameron, who loves to share books with his children – and who confirmed that his favourite children’s book is…The Lorax by Dr Seuss. The children were also treated to a tour of the Cabinet Rooms, where they had the chance to meet No. 10′s resident cat, Larry.

To the Upper Waiting Hall in the Houses of Parliament last night for the Opening Ceremony of the World Book Day exhibition. We have been in touch with MPs to encourage them to take part in World Book Day activities in their constituencies - and were also offering the chance for one MP to win £1,000 of children’s books to donate to an organisation of their choice, sponsored by Scholastic Clubs and Fairs. We were also delighted to welcome authors Francesca Simon and Cressida Cowell. A good night was had by all with MPs promising to spread the World Book Day word!

Top left: Francesca Simon, Ed Vaisey (Minister for Culture), Kirsten Grant, World Book Day, Tristram Hunt MP and Joanna Prior, World Book Day.
