Lint by Steve Aylett
Lint
by Steve Aylett

Lint is ostensibly a biography of Jeff Lint, the best science fiction writer in the world. However, Jeff Lint is a figment of the author’s imagination. What Lint amounts to is a wry, comical parody of everything about pulp sci fi.

Although there is terrible tragedy on all levels in this book, at the end human spirit wins and there is a light. Loads of issues addressed and gripped me from the start.

I have not read this book, but Pauline's other stories which usually feature a policeman who likes sailing and riding his motorbike are really very good. It is nice to see that detective stories can have their place with reading groups too. Just because something is conventional does not mean that it is not discussion worthy.

I was a bit apprehensive about reading this not really sure what to expect. However I found myself gripped from the first page to the last. Predominately this story has to be described as thought-provoking, not only do you find yourself exploring the issues concerned but sometimes you find yourself looking at your own reactions. True that the format of the narrative manipulates them by revealing the story bit by bit but equally I feel this serves to take the black and white out of the situation and allows the reader to consider its complexities. I finished this last night; 24 hours later I’m still mulling it over, seeing patterns and thinking and rethinking. It seems trite to say I’ve been on a journey but I do feel that genuinely.

I am thrilled that my novel came third in this competition. But even better than that is the pleasure I've had from reading these comments. Thank you for your support and if there is anything you''d like to flag, do; I'm writing the sequel, so it's valuable feedforward. cm

I loved Speaking of Love - it completely blew me away. The three central characters are excellently drawn and I was pulled through the novel wanting to know what would happen to them, and how their complex relationships would evolve. As these characters and their relationships are explored, so too are their shared and separate pasts - pieces of the puzzle are continually proferred, though never in such a way as they feel incongruous in the narrative. Nothing in Angela Young's novel is forced, and, given the often stark or emotional subject matter, she does amazingly well to avoid being either saccharine or maudlin. The tagline, as it were, is "Speaking of Love is a novel about what happens when people who love each other don't say so." While true, I hope that doesn't undermine the depth of this novel, the beautiful character portraits and the true humanity which Young has depicted.

Gods in Alabama by Joshilyn Jackson
Gods in Alabama

Our heroine, Lena, seems buttoned-up, almost prudish, at the start of the novel. She won’t sleep with her adoring boyfriend. She won’t tell lies. And she will never, ever return to Possett, Alabama. Why?
