Scholastic are so excited to be publishing the next fantastic book by Sylvia Bishop (author of Erica’s Elephant and The Bookshop Girl) that they couldn’t wait any longer to share the gorgeous cover for Sylvia’s next book with you! So without further ado, here is the cover for The Secret of the Night Train:

Isn’t it beautiful? The Secret of the Night Train publishes on 3rd May and is filled with adventure, mystery and DIAMONDS!

When Max is sent to Istanbul to stay with her boring Great Aunt Elodie, little does she expect to be plunged into a thrilling night-time adventure across Europe. And when the Heartbreak Diamond goes missing, Max must find her feet in a whirling world of would-be diamond smugglers, thieves and undercover detectives. Will Max discover the real diamond thief before they reach their destination?

Sean Williams, Senior Designer at Scholastic, worked on the beautiful cover for The Secret of the Night Train and said:

When I got the brief and sat down with Sophie, the editor of The Secret of the Night Train, we both were very quickly on the same page in terms of what sort of look and tone we wanted to go for with this new book by the critically-acclaimed author Sylvia Bishop– quirky and beautiful and influenced by Wes Anderson’s ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’ film. The madcap European setting and scenario of this book lines up quite nicely with that of the film, so we used it as a spring board for ideas and a visual tone to pursue with the cover. All the while, we carefully considered its place in a children’s middle-grade space, appealing to what’s working in the market right now – gorgeously illustrated, narrative book covers.

The illustrator, Marco Guadalupi, has been a total joy to work with on this project throughout the whole process. When he sent through the first colour rough for the cover, Marco said that he’d been ‘inspired by Sylvia Bishop’s strange yet charming characters and setting’ which definitely shine through on the final cover.

The idea to include a border and the cogs was his brilliant idea, which has only lent itself to bringing the whole Wes Anderson feel together on the cover and throughout the insides in his spot-on illustrations.
