The five category winners of the 47th Costa Book Awards were revealed last night. Have you read these brilliant books yet?

Irish novelist Sally Rooney won the Costa Novel Award and is, at 27,  the youngest author to date to win this prestigious award with her second novel Normal People, a coming-of-age love story which the judges said ‘would electrify any reader’.

Stuart Turton, who also scooped The Novel Award at the BAMB Readers Awards, won the Costa First Novel Award for The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastlea genre-busting murder mystery that has sold in twenty territories to date and has been optioned for TV by House Productions. 

Elsewhere, Hilary McKay won the Costa Children’s Book Award for the second time for The Skylarks’ Wara story which the judges called ‘as perfect a novel as you could ever want to read’. The Costa Poetry Award was taken home by J.O. Morgan for Assurancesa book-length war-poem, while Bart van Es won the Costa Biography Award for his memoir The Cut Out Girl, a deeply moving story of war, families, loss, survival and friendship.

Dominic Paul, Managing Director of Costa said, “The Costa Book Awards are all about recognising and celebrating some of the hugely enjoyable books out there. This year’s stellar collection of award-winning books highlight the exceptional talent of authors writing in the UK and Ireland today.  Many congratulations to each of this year’s Costa Award winners.”

The five winning authors, each of whom will receive £5,000, were selected from 641 entries and their books are now eligible for the ultimate prize – the 2018 Costa Book of the Year which will be announced at the Costa Book Awards ceremony on 29 January 2019. The winner of the Costa Short Story Award, voted for by the public, will also be announced at the ceremony. The shortlisted stories for the Costa Short Story Award are now up on the Costa Book Awards website (voting is open until 11 January).
