Get ready for a Summer of Reading!

« Back

We are absolutely delighted to be supporting the Summer of Reading, a fantastic initiative to keep children reading all summer.

Coordinated by The Reading Agency and bringing together over 20 organisations across the reading, literacy and cultural sectors, the Summer of Reading is a collaborative programme of events, resources and reading activities, all designed to support families and teachers and to inspire a love of reading for pleasure.

There are games, videos and competitions from BookTrust and lots of creative booky activities at the British Library’s webspace Discovering Children’s Books. Have a look at Bookmark’s brand new magazine The Story Corner, or join The Reader in The Storybarn on Facebook every Friday at 11:30am for stories, crafting and fun.

Of course, there are lots of World Book Day resources to enjoy during the Summer of Reading too. Get started with our Scavenger Hunt Activity Sheets, created in partnership with Twinkl and designed for three different age groups. Our Share A Story Corner video books and activities have easy-to follow-stories and tips for reading together. Or head over to the World Book Day YouTube channel to hear short stories read by your favourite authors and illustrators.

Since this is the Summer of Reading, now is the perfect time to come and join the World Book Day Book Club! With new books featured every month along with extracts, author videos and more, it’s a brilliant way to keep in touch with friends over the summer holidays.

New events and resources will be announced every week until 17 September – including in-person events at libraries as they re-open. So let’s get reading this summer and help our kids to build skills, increase confidence and improve wellbeing, as well as supporting their ongoing educational attainment.

And don’t forget to share your reading activity on social media with the hashtag #SummerofReading!
