World Book Day reading for fun resources

  • Looking for a brand new activity to encourage reading for fun? Our Activity Bank is full of ideas including reading treasure hunts, guessing games, and creative door displays. Find ideas from fellow practitioners to encourage reading for fun in your setting.

 

  • Audiobooks are a perfect way for children to listen to stories in a different format to a physical book. We have some brilliant NEW audiobooks in our World of Stories hub including Let’s Move: An Animal Dance, Gargoyles Guardians of the Source and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

 

  • Enjoy video stories featuring familiar characters, and fun tips for reading with small groups of children. Our free activity packs have brilliant activities you can do in your setting.

Survey Feedback

Thank you to everyone who took part in our 2025 survey. Here are the most popular ways education settings celebrated World Book Day this year:

Early year settings:

  • Bringing in books from home to share
  • Story-themed role play activities
  • Dressing up including low-cost dressing up activities
  • Getting parents involved through events and workshops
  • Running crafting activities around books
  • Visiting local bookshops for the £1/€1.50 book token exchange

Primary:

  • Buddy reading – children of mixed age groups listening to books read by other teachers or other children.
  • Parental involvement – hosting during school and after school sessions including reading cafes, reading with children and more.
  • Increased reading time and encouraging children to share books with others.
  • Teachers sharing their favourite books with children
  • Dressing up including home made costumes and low-cost alternatives

School library and Secondary:

  • Distributing World Book Day £1/€1.50 book tokens to pupils to exchange for a £1/€1.50 book
  • Having the World Book Day books in school to support the token exchange including pop-up bookshops from local booksellers
  • Encouraging book swaps for pupils to share reading recommendations
  • Increasing reading time during school (individual and collective reading)
  • Hosting competitions to promote reading for fun including crafting and design competitions
  • Teachers dressing up/sharing their favourite books with pupils

Independent Bookshop Week 2025 runs from 14–21 June, celebrating the amazing role indie bookshops play in their communities. Support your local and pick up some summer reads.
