The Winner's Curse
By Marie Rutkoski
Published by: Bloomsbury

Recommended by: Alwyn Hamilton, author of Rebel of the Sands, the first book in a phenomenal trilogy packed with shooting contests, train robberies, festivals under the stars, powerful Djinni magic and an electrifying love story.

The Winner’s Curse is so good. I never tell people what this book is about but how it made me feel.

I started it at 9pm on a work night, thinking I’ll read a couple of chapters to lull myself to sleep. The next thing I knew it was 4.00am and I had rotated myself 180 degrees on my bed and I was finishing it, shouting “Kestrel, no!” because I was so emotionally invested in the lives of two fictional people.

Work prompted me to to change my password the next day and I changed it to one of the iconic lines from the book: ‘The God of Lies loves you’.

I was just so obsessed with it for the next year until the next book came out. The whole trilogy is out now and you’ll probably want to read them all back-to-back.
