Discover all the ways to celebrate World Book Day with your World Book Day £1 authors!

3rd March

10.30am: World Book Day’s official event, Books that Make you LOL! Starring: Humza Arshad, Alex Bellos & Ben Lyttleton (Football School), Jonny Duddle and Zanib Mian; hosted by Kenny Baraka, motivational speaker. Tune in directly to the livestream here.

And then..

Why not watch your favourite authors sharing a story? Our 10 Minute Story Sharing videos, featuring our £1 book authors and much-loved faces like Jacqueline Wilson will encourage you to read together this World Book Day. Settle in and get cosy while you listen to all these bite-sized book readings on our Youtube channel. 

Show your shares! For every week during March, we’re hosting weekly competitions giving you the chance to win £100 of National Book Tokens by sending us photos of you and your family reading and sharing stories. Find out more and how to enter here

We’ve collaborated with 4 charities and leading children’s publisher Egmont to provide insights into the impact of the last year on children’s reading. 10.30am: World Book Day’s official Words and Pictures event, starring Joseph Coelho & Fiona Lumbers, Tom Fletcher and Lydia Monks and special guest Rob Biddulph, hosted by Nigel Clarke. Tune in here

11.30am: BBC Live Lessons event, starring Sita Brahmachari, Jess French and Football School, with a live Q&A with Humza Arshad. In partnership with Twinkl, we have lots of free fun resources to accompany the Live Lesson, including World Book Day assemblies. Find all of them here

2pm – 2.30pm: World Book Day Scavenger Hunt: we’ve partnered with Twinkl to help everyone discover their love of reading. We have a choice of activities to help demonstrate the joy reading can bring. Dive into a book scavenger hunt and try to find specific words or items from stories you have at home or in class. Check out our resource page to find these next week. 

5th March

2-2.45pm: KS2 event with Konnie Huq, in partnership with South West ASCEL schools/libraries and Authors Aloud 

2nd March

10:30am: Tune in to David Walliams’ World Book Day AMAAAZING Assembly! David Walliams will be in conversation with Blue Peter presenter Lindsey Russell for an assembly for World Book Day – watch the assembly from home along with the rest of your school. Register here

3rd March

Create a Story with Chicken House: Chicken House’s ‘Create A Story’ activity is a great way to get ready for World Book Day. Maz Evans and her author friends – Holly Rivers, Emma Shevah and Christopher Edge – want to inspire children to hatch their own creative stories. Everyone can take part, whether they are at home or at school – all they will need is a pen, paper and plenty of imagination.

4th March

In the morning…

BBC Breakfast: tune in to see Julia Donaldson, author of The Gruffalo and Malcolm Donaldson sharing stories while dressed up as the book characters! If you’re inspired, check out our ideas on how to make your own book character costume to wear while you share your favourite stories. 

9:15am: Join CBBC presenter Kenzie Benali and Football School authors Alex Bellos and Ben Lyttleton for a fun, free live event! Hosted in collaboration with the National Literacy Trust and the Premier League, the event will be an interactive quiz, including a round led by footballers from the Premier League, the English Football League, and Women’s Super League! 9-10am: Scala Radio’s Screentime with World Book Day. Scala will be playing music from films and TV shows that have been adapted from children’s books, including The Secret Garden, The BFG and Harry Potter. There will be exciting conversations about how to get involved with World Book Day, as well guest readings throughout the day. 

In the Afternoon…

1:45-2:45pm: Fonetti’s World Book Day online extravaganza! Register in advance to hear stories from Clare Balding and Christina Gabbitas, who will answer questions from young readers. Fonetti are also launching a new competition, where the winners can become a published author. Register for the event here

 2-2.45pm: KS3 event with Robert Muchamore, in partnership with South West ASCEL schools/libraries and Authors Aloud 

2.30pm – 3.30pm: Twinkl’s World Book Day Quiz! Twinkl are hosting a fun, quick fire World Book Day quiz. For children in the early years there will be the reading of a short story then asking some fun, quiz questions based on the book to practice children’s retelling and recall skills. Afterwards, there’s some further quiz fun as children can try to name that story with Twinkl’s PowerPoint and/or try another scavenger hunt for some further screen free, energy-burning fun.

For older readers…

4-5pm: Spark Your Story with this free virtual Creative Writing Workshop. Aimed for ages 16-25,  join Isabelle King, Norfolk Storyteller and children’s author, to explore the stunning landscapes of Alfred Cohen, to inspire your writing.
