School’s out – So let’s read your way this summer!

Summer is here – long days, new adventures, and plenty of time to dive into reading. Whether it’s under a tree, on the sofa, or in a homemade reading den, the holidays are the perfect moment for children to discover how, when, and where they love to read.

Our Read Your Way campaign is all about helping children choose their own reading path. Because the best kind is the kind they want to do.

The Six Superpowers of a Summer Reader

Our research shows there are 6 ways to help children become readers for life – and summer is the perfect time to try them.

  1. Being read to regularly

Audiobooks are a great way to enjoy stories on the go – on a walk, in the car, or at the beach. You’ll find free audiobooks on our World of Stories hub, plus great selections on free library apps like Libby and BorrowBox. Our official audio partner Yoto also has a treasure trove of stories in the Yoto App.

  1. Having books at home

Libraries and bookshops are full of surprises and a great place to start! Find your local library here, or pop into your local bookshop or charity shop. You can also visit our Share a Story Corner hub to help get started.

  1. Having a choice in what to read

Children say reading is best when they can choose what (47%), when (42%), and where (37%) they read. Let them pick – comics, fact books, poetry, magazines – it all counts. Try our Read What I Need template to help children decide what suits them best.

  1. Finding time to read

Even five minutes a day can make a difference. Use Pawprint’s Time to Read resource and help children track their reading time with a DIY clock. Audiobooks also let you read while doing other things – double win!

  1. Having trusted help to find a book

Need a bit of help choosing? Check out Love to Read’s children’s guide for fun, confidence-boosting tips on how to pick your next page-turner.

  1. Making reading FUN!

Reading is more enjoyable when it feels like fun.

  • Start a summer book club with friends (everything you need is in our Book Club Hub).

Let’s Spark a Summer of Stories

This summer, we’re on a mission to inspire children to read for fun. Whether they’re reading alone, being read to, or swapping stories with friends, every page turned builds confidence, imagination, and a love of reading.

So however, your child likes to read – quietly, aloud, upside-down or on the move – let them Read Their Way.

Discover booklists, free activities, videos, audiobooks and more on our website.

And don’t forget to share your summer reading moments on social using #ReadYourWay.

From all of us at World Book Day – have a brilliant summer, and happy reading!
