A Love to Read resource

This guide helps you choose books you will enjoy. It shares simple ways to find your next favourite read.

For tips from teachers, see How to Choose a Book – Teacher’s Guide.

1. Think

First, think about what kind of book you want. Do you want something funny, exciting, cosy or new?
When you know how you want reading to feel, choosing becomes easier.

2. Choose

Next, try different ways to pick a book. Look at the cover, read the blurb, explore the pictures or try the first page.
You can also choose by genre, author, series or a recommendation.

3. Share

Talk about books with friends. Tell someone what you enjoyed or give a quick recommendation.
Because reading is social, sharing makes it more fun.

4. Ask for help

Teachers and school staff know lots of books. Ask them for ideas or tips if you feel stuck.
They can help you find something that suits you.

5. Look around

Notice how books are organised in your classroom or library. Look for labels, genres or reviews written by other children.
Helping organise displays can also help you discover new books.

6. Swap if needed

Sometimes a book is not right for you. That is okay. Try another one.
There is always a better book waiting.
