A specially curated starter collection of books for students aged 11–16, organised across the five wellbeing themes. Each suggestion includes the age range and format (fiction, non-fiction, poetry), giving students and staff jumping-off points for conversations about how different types of reading can support mental health and emotional wellbeing. These reading suggestions demonstrate the breadth of reading that connects to wellbeing, from contemporary YA fiction to classic poetry and inspiring non-fiction.
Why it works
Teenagers can be overwhelmed by choice or dismissive of adult-selected reading lists. This list works because it is organised by wellbeing theme rather than genre or reading level, helping students see books in a new light. By including varied formats and age ranges, the suggestions recognise that different students have different preferences and abilities. They act as starting points for students to generate their own recommendations rather than as prescribed reading. Seeing familiar titles under wellbeing themes also helps students understand how books they already enjoy can support their mental health.
Who is it for
- Students aged 11–16 looking for reading ideas
- English teachers planning reading for pleasure
- Form tutors facilitating conversations
- School librarians building themed displays
- Parents supporting reading at home
How to use it
Share the list before World Book Day to help students think about books they have already read. Use it to spark discussions about why certain books resonate with them or how reading supports wellbeing. These titles are examples, not required reading. Encourage students to add their own recommendations and debate how books fit different themes. Consider creating displays or digital lists that grow as students contribute their discoveries.
Get started
Print copies for tutor rooms, the library, or shared spaces. Share digitally via your school’s learning platform. Create a visual display that groups books by theme and invite staff to share which books they have read and loved. Use the suggestions during your secondary Assembly to illustrate the wellbeing themes in practice.
