Five colourful A4 cards inspired by the NHS 5 Ways to Wellbeing: Connect, Be Active, Take Notice, Keep Learning and Give. Children use these fold-and-glue cards to record book recommendations with simple prompts that suit every reading level. They can write, draw, or tick boxes to show why a book matters, which makes the activity inclusive for all ages and abilities.

Why it works

The cards put children in charge of sharing their reading experiences. They ask children to reflect on how books made them feel. Also, the variety of response options means every child can take part. The fold-and-glue format creates a satisfying finished piece that children value. The two-sided design gives space for depth without overwhelming younger children.

Who is it for

  • Children aged 3–11 completing book recommendations
  • Teachers facilitating the activity in class
  • Teaching assistants supporting individual children
  • Families helping at home
  • Anyone collecting and displaying recommendations

How to use it

Children complete both sides of their chosen card while it is flat. Then cut, fold and glue to make a sturdy finished piece. Decide whether you want one copy for display and one for children to take home. For example, photocopy the flat version before children fold them. Model the cards using example books so children understand the prompts. Allow children to choose which card matches their book best.

Get started

Print enough copies of each card template for your class. Prepare scissors, glue and pencils or crayons. Demonstrate completing a card with a book the children know. Help younger children with cutting and folding, or prepare these steps in advance. Download the Book collector card templates PDF to begin.
