My book map is a creative activity designed for families to help children explore where reading happens in their world. Children use the illustrated map template to draw and label key places where they can find, buy or borrow books, such as school, the library or a local bookshop. They can also add favourite places to read, including a friend’s house, the park or a cosy corner at home. The second template provides a blank version so children can design their own icons and build a personalised map. This activity can also be used by schools, libraries and groups.

Why it works

This resource encourages children to think about reading as something linked to real places in their lives. Mapping familiar spaces helps build awareness of book-rich environments and sparks conversations about where they enjoy reading most. In addition, drawing their own icons supports creativity and ownership, which can increase engagement and confidence.

Who is it for

  • Families and carers
  • Teachers
  • Librarians
  • Booksellers
  • World Book Day partners
  • Community groups
  • Children’s activity providers

How to use it

  • Print one or both versions of the map template
  • Invite children to think about the places in their community linked to books and reading
  • Encourage them to draw buildings, pathways, icons and special reading spots
  • Use the key section to label each place or let children design their own symbols on the blank version
  • After completing the map, children can share it with a partner or in a small group to talk about their favourite reading places
  • You can also extend the activity by asking children to invent an imaginary bookshop town for extra fun

Get started

Download one or both templates and print them on paper or card. Encourage children to take their time adding details and display the finished maps where they can inspire more book conversations.
