This book review template helps pupils reflect on their favourite stories in a fun, creative way. It encourages them to think about what they enjoyed, what they didn’t, and who else might like the book.

Why it works

Writing reviews helps pupils build confidence and express opinions clearly. It strengthens speaking, listening, and writing skills, and helps children engage more deeply with what they read. Teachers can display reviews in class, share them in the library, or send them home to inspire family reading.

How it works

Pupils write about a favourite story and explain why they liked it. Then, they choose a favourite character, describe something they didn’t enjoy, and say how the story made them feel. Finally, they think about who else might enjoy it and write a short message to the author.

Teacher ideas

  • Pair pupils to share and discuss their reviews.
  • Create a class display to celebrate authors and genres.
  • Encourage pupils to read a classmate’s recommendation and write a follow-up review.
  • Use it as a guided writing task in literacy lessons.
  • Include review writing in reading challenges or school library projects.
  • Record video or audio reviews to share in class or assemblies.
