This downloadable activity pack accompanies Chaos at the Chocolate Factory, an exclusive World Book Day £1/€1.50 book inspired by Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The story is written by Sibéal Pounder and illustrated by Emily Jones.
The activities invite children to explore imagination, invention, and playful problem-solving as they step into Charlie Bucket’s shoes and imagine running Willy Wonka’s famous factory for themselves.
Why it works
This story is full of creativity, humour, and delicious chaos. As a result, it offers rich opportunities for talk, games, and hands-on play.
The pack supports reading for fun by:
- Encouraging imaginative thinking and playful ideas
- Supporting talk and storytelling linked to the book
- Connecting reading with creative making and movement
- Helping children explore “what if?” thinking without pressure
How to use it
Use the pack before reading to spark curiosity, or afterwards to extend enjoyment of the story. Children are invited to:
- Talk about imaginary chocolate flavours, factory rooms, and inventions
- Play Chaos Tower, a fast-paced stacking game that celebrates silly failure
- Create secret recipes through outdoor mud kitchen play
- Design and build their own chocolate factory machine using recycled materials
All activities work with or without the book. They suit short classroom sessions, family time at home, and library groups.
