Outdoor reading games inspired by stories. This downloadable pack shares outdoor games that bring stories to life through imaginative play.

It is part of the 2025 partnership with Jigsaw Education Group. Some of the games link to the £1/€1.50 book selection from that year, but all support reading for pleasure in active, low-cost ways.

The resources use natural materials and open spaces. They work in both urban and rural settings.

Please note: this resource features 2025 campaign branding.

Why it works

These games help children connect reading with movement, imagination and collaboration.

Children step into the role of characters, explore emotions and build their own story worlds. The activities encourage discussion about books they enjoy and give children space to express their ideas.

The games are flexible and open-ended. They use free, natural materials and can be adapted for different ages and abilities.

Outdoor play also supports wellbeing, focus and social development.

Who is it for

  • Teachers or practitioners planning outdoor learning
  • PSHE leads linking reading and wellbeing
  • Teaching assistants and support staff
  • Clubs and enrichment groups
  • Schools and settings looking for low-cost, inclusive activities

How to use it

Choose one game as part of your World Book Day plans. Or use several across a week of outdoor reading activities.

Invite children to select a book they know and enjoy. Encourage them to adapt the games using characters, settings or themes from their chosen stories.

Use natural materials from your outdoor space. Keep equipment simple and flexible.

Adapt group sizes and challenge levels to suit your setting.

Get started

Download the pack and select a game that fits your timetable and space. Gather simple natural materials such as sticks, leaves and stones. Brief children on the focus book or allow them to choose their own. Create a base area or storytelling space outdoors. Allow time for reflection at the end. Ask children what links they noticed between the game and their reading.
