World Book Night 2024

« Back

World Book Night is a national celebration of reading and books for adults and young people presented by The Reading Agency, taking place on 23 April every year. World Book Night is for everyone, bringing people together to share the joy of reading.

1 in 3 (31%) adults in England don’t regularly read for pleasure, rising to 1 in 2 (46%) of young people. World Book Night celebrates reading for pleasure, encouraging everyone to spend time reading and talk about books. It’s accessible for everyone, from less-confident readers to those who read regularly.

We’re excited to be joining in and celebrating the difference that reading makes to our lives.  We’d love for you to join in too! There are lots of ways you can get involved and enjoy reading:

  • Not sure what to read? The Reading Agency’s Quick Reads are great, short stories by bestselling authors, and cost just £1 at bookshops, or are free at libraries across the country. See this year’s booklist here.
  • If you’re looking after children, share some time reading before bed with our Share a Story Corner video stories and World of Stories free audiobooks.
  • Choose any book you want to read and join in the #ReadingHour from 7-8pm on 23 April, or maybe even spend the time talking to friends and family about books you’ve enjoyed. Join in the conversation online!
  • A little reading can go a long way, so The Reading Agency are inviting everyone to join the Road to Reading this World Book Night. It’s simple! Sign up and pledge to read for 30 minutes a week, with help along the way, and see what a difference it makes.
