Reading for pleasure

As a charity, our mission is to promote reading for pleasure, offering every child and young person the opportunity to have a book of their own. We want to see more children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, with a life-long habit of reading for pleasure and the improved life chances this brings them.

Six elements combine to create one reading superpower. These elements shape everything we do:

  • Being read to regularly
  • Having books at home and at school
  • Having a choice in what to read
  • Finding time to read
  • Having trusted help to find a book
  • Making reading FUN!

Dressing up

Dressing up is an effective way to encourage children (particularly reluctant readers) to engage with reading. It can help children to express their personal reading choices and share reading recommendations. The most important thing is that it reflects your child’s choice of reading.

If dressing up doesn’t work for you we have lots of great alternatives on our dressing up page.
