Readathon
The UK’s National Sponsored Reading Event
Since Readathon was founded in 1984 its aim has always been to champion children’s leisure reading, but we are equally proud of the money it raises for our charities, CLIC Sargent and The Roald Dahl Foundation. We have raised nearly £22,000,000. That’s a lot of money and a lot of reading of a lot of books.
Taking part in Readathon really does encourage children to get the reading habit and to help other children who are very poorly. That’s why we say that Readathon is reading for life and why Readathon is Britain’s biggest sponsored literary event.
‘The children thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of Readathon and they could be seen reading all over the school.’ Karen Thomson, Head, Albyn Lower School, Aberdeen.
A World Book Day favourite
Teachers and parents are very happy with all the extra reading activity generated by Readathon and it has become a favourite with many schools to run as their World Book Day event.
In recognition of their commitment to reading, teachers who run three or more Readathons receive a testimonial from the National Reading Campaign.
It’s always a pleasure
Children undertake to read books, or do other literacy-based activities, in return for pledges of money from family and friends. The money collected by your school goes to helping seriously ill children in your region.
‘I had all but given up on trying to get my daughter to read, but this has given her the push she needed, and we can’t stop her now. Thanks.’

Our free pack gives you everything you need to run a successful Readathon. Teachers who run Readathon for the first time are amazed at how easy it is and find it almost runs itself.
The average Readathon lasts about 3 weeks from giving out the sponsor forms to collecting the money. Some schools ask children to read during the holidays, some run it in school time, one even had a 24 hour marathon read!
'The promotional literature and activities in the organiser's pack were invaluable and helped us to promote the event across the school; the claim that it 'runs itself' couldn't be more true'
